چکیده
Biogenic manganese oxides (BMOs) formed in a culture of the Mn(II)-oxidizing fungus Acremonium strictum strain KR21-2 are known to retain enzymatic Mn(II) oxidation activity. Consequently, these increasingly attracting attention as substrate for eliminating toxic elements from contaminated wastewaters. In this study, we examined Ba2+ sequestration potential enzymatically active BMOs with and without exogenous Mn2+. The readily oxidized Mn2+ produce another BMO phase, subsequently sequestered at pH 7.0, irreversible dominant pathway. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy diffraction analyses demonstrated alteration turbostratic tightly stacked birnessite through possible incorporation into interlayer. Sr2+, Ca2+, Mg2+ was insignificant, preserved. Results competitive experiments revealed that favored over Mg2+. These results explain preferential accumulation natural Mn oxide phases produced by microbes under circumneutral environmental conditions. findings highlight applying

Nickel and lead sequestration in manganese oxide-coated montmorillonite.
Amorphous hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) is an important mineral in soils and sediments influencing the mobility and bioavailability of metal contaminants. In this study, nickel and lead sorption to discrete HMO and HMO-coated montmorillonite was investigated mechanistically. The effect of pH and concentration revealed that when normalized to the mass of oxide present, the HMO-coated montmorillo...
متن کاملSpatially resolved characterization of biogenic manganese oxide production within a bacterial biofilm.
Pseudomonas putida strain MnB1, a biofilm-forming bacterial culture, was used as a model for the study of bacterial Mn oxidation in freshwater and soil environments. The oxidation of aqueous Mn+2 [Mn+2(aq)] by P. putida was characterized by spatially and temporally resolving the oxidation state of Mn in the presence of a bacterial biofilm, using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) com...
متن کاملManganese Oxide Thin Films Prepared by Nonaqueous Sol-Gel Processing: Preferential Formation of Birnessite
High quality manganese oxide thin films with smooth surfaces and even thicknesses have been prepared with a nonaqueous sol-gel process involving reduction of tetraethylammonium permanganate in methanol. Spin-coated films have been cast onto soft glass, quartz, and Ni foil substrates, with two coats being applied for optimum crystallization. The addition of alkali metal cations as dopants result...
متن کاملReversible and irreversible processing of biogenic olefins on acidic aerosols
Recent evidence has suggested that heterogeneous chemistry of oxygenated hydrocarbons, primarily carbonyls, plays a role in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA); however, evidence is emerging that direct uptake of alkenes on acidic aerosols does occur and can contribute to SOA formation. In the present study, significant uptake of monoterpenes, oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterp...
متن کاملHighly Efficient Elimination of Carbon Monoxide with Binary Copper-Manganese Oxide Contained Ordered Nanoporous Silicas
Ordered nanoporous silicas containing various binary copper-manganese oxides were prepared as catalytic systems for effective carbon monoxide elimination. The carbon monoxide elimination efficiency was demonstrated as a function of the [Mn]/[Cu] ratio and reaction time. The prepared catalysts were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, small- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD...
